Hello! I am formerly WBØOIZ and before that (39 years ago) I was WNØOIZ.
My home is near Kansas City in the college community of Warrensburg, Missouri. I have been actively involved in many clubs around the Kansas City area over the years. I held one term as President of the HARC (Heart of America Radio Club) and for several years I was the Emergency Coordinator for Eastern Jackson County, Missouri. For about 20 of the last 39 years I have gotten my Weather Spotter training and have done quite a bit of work with the National Weather Service / SKYwarn and today am an active member of the local ARES group. When computers and Ham radio began to mix in the '80s, I ran one of the first long term packet radio bulletin boards in the mid-west and kept it on the air for over 13 years as one of the first and longest running primary store and forward message operations in the region. During that time I wrote some of the logging software that is surprisingly still in operation today, and I continued to look for ways to integrate the emerging internet into our Amateur Radio hobby.
My proudest moment in my Ham Radio Career happened when I was young and very new in the hobby. I answered a Mayday call early one morning while monitoring the Coast Guard/Intercontinental Traffic Net on 14.313 from our High School station. Our 95' TH6DXX created a situation where I was the only station hearing the Government station in Guatemala City calling for help on battery power as the terrible earthquake in 1976 had destroyed all power and communications in that tiny country. At 16 years old, I was given control of the Coast Guard net by K4CG and was asked to maintain contact with the Guatemala station! For 72 hours we ran hundreds of Health and Welfare inquiries and were the only USA link into that country until conditions improved. For organizing this effort, keeping our heads and providing emergency contact while liasing with the US Government authorities, as well as having the net operations skills necessary to run this International Net effectively, three highschool kids received the very rare ARRL Public Service Commendation. I still treasure this award as my finest moment in Amatur Radio so far!
Many of you know that for approximately 9 years I left the computer world and became a mobile semi-truck operator roaming mostly around the midwest. On Dec 4, 2009 that all changed when I was involved in a serious accident. The short story is that the truck turned over, I was hurt and the trucking career ended. After several months of recovery and a massive restructuring of my life, I started in a new direction. I am now retired due to my dissablity and find that I am enjoying all that life offers someone no longer required to work for a living, and overlooking the abject poverty, it is a very pleasant way to exist.
One of my favorite things to do is to participate on the various net operation found on the bands throughout the day and night. I can be found in many places rag chewing but most regularly you will find me on the 2Øm OMISS http://www.omiss.net net, one of the county hunter nets or on any one of the many fine nets run by the 39Ø5 Century Club http://www.3905ccn.com working toward my Master's Certificate. Sometimes you will find me in the CW bands giving my keyer a workout and you might even hear me on a satellite or two. Aside from contest operations, you will never hear me rolling through contacts with nothing more than a signal report and a name. I will always try to engage someone in real conversation if the conditions permit.
I am currently the Public Information Officer for the Warrensburg Area Amateur Radio Club, www.waarci.org and more often than not I am monitoring our repeater on 146.88- PL 102.7.
I hope to see you on the bands!
73 and good DX!
Cary

FM
For Field Day operating, FM is probably the easiest VHF mode to implement. You’ll have little trouble finding FM rigs to use; even a
hand-held transceiver can make a fine Field Day rig. FM doesn’t have the range of CW or SSB, but it is the most popular
communications mode on the VHF and UHF bands. You’ll find the greatest amount of FM simplex activity on the 2-meter band,
although 6 meter FM may be worth a try as well. Remember that Field Day rules prohibit the use of repeaters. This means you’ll
have to hunt for contacts on the recognized simplex frequencies.
